Alex Bregman given first assignment on arrival to Red Sox

The long free-agency drama came to an end on Wednesday when Alex Bregman formally signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.

Red Sox supporters are excited for Bregman to help their team reach the postseason, but one former player had a unique request for the two-time World Series champion.

Bregman was greeted and given some homework on social media by Kevin Millar, a vital member of the 2004 Red Sox team that ended an 86-year championship drought.

“Welcome to Red Sox Nation @ABREG_1! Now you have to watch ‘The Comeback’ on @netflix and then you will officially be family with Uncle Kevin!!!! Congrats Dawg!” Millar posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Alex Bregman joins the Red Sox in their pursuit of a postseason comeback.

The Netflix documentary “The Comeback” follows Boston’s incredible journey to their first World Series championship in almost a century, which was capped off by the team’s historic 3-0 ALCS comeback against the New York Yankees. A key figure in that series, Millar is renowned for inspiring the clubhouse with his “Do not let us win tonight” speech prior to Game 4.

Millar’s message serves as a reminder of the expectations that come with donning a Boston uniform, even though Bregman is familiar with the Red Sox and their postseason past. The seasoned infielder won titles in 2017 and 2022 while playing for the Houston Astros for the previous nine seasons.

Now, after missing the playoffs since 2021, he joins a Red Sox team eager for October success.

Bregman, who plays third base most of the time for the Astros, is anticipated to switch to second base in Boston. The lineup, which has been strengthened this offseason by the additions of Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Aroldis Chapman, benefits from his powerful right-handed bat.

Bregman ended 2024 with a.260 batting average, 26 home runs, and 75 RBIs despite having a slow start. In 21 career games at the historic ballpark, Bregman has hit.375 with seven home runs and a 1.240 OPS, which suggests he could succeed in his new home.

The Red Sox made it apparent that they believed in Bregman’s ability to contribute by offering him $40 million a year, which is $10 million more than other teams. He may now need to make time to accommodate Millar’s request as he gets ready for his first full-squad workout in Fort Myers. Boston might be on the verge of its next memorable postseason moment if Bregman adopts Red Sox culture as Millar hopes.
